No Training Wheels!

Michenna is a quirky kid. The day we moved from Texas to Florida (in 2004) she announced that she was no longer going to wear diapers, just panties. Hearing this 10 minutes before we left on a 13-hour drive was . . . unexpected. I made a bargain with her: keep your Pull-Ups dry all day, and tomorrow we will put you in panties. The next day (in Florida) I put her in panties. Beginning and end of potty training.

So what does potty training have to do with riding a bike? Not much, except for the method. I've been telling Michenna for almost 2 years that she should learn to ride without training wheels, but it was too scary, too hard, too unimportant. Then peer pressure kicked in (it can be good sometimes) and she wanted to learn. We took her out on her bike on Monday night. Spencer tried to hold on to the bike to help her balance, they were both getting frustrated, and finally Michenna said, "Daddy, can we just take off the training wheels and try?" He did, she tried, and SUCCEEDED! It took her maybe 2 minutes to figure out how to ride without training wheels. Beginning and end of bike "training".

(You may want to watch the video without sound; our neighbor was mowing his lawn.)

Aren't kids just interesting in doing things their own special way? Michenna is just awesome!

Hooray for Michenna! Good job sweet girl!
(Now I'm wondering if I still know how to ride a bike. Maybe I shouldn't try; the message you'd get might be as terrifying as the ones I used to get from Coach Rudwick. ;0)

I'm glad Spencer was there to experience this "growing up" moment! Michenna, that's just awesome! It always makes you feel so good when you accomplish a goal and this one was great! Now, just watch for cars -- on the street and in driveways.......
